Practising Certificate Scheme News (August 2025)

This Month: How to get a new activity approved for PCS hours and enter the competition at the Queensland Mining Industry Safety and Health Conference (QMISHC2025!).

Question: How do you go about getting a new activity approved for recognition of hours towards your PCS requirement?

Looking up the official PCS website it says "If you undertake an activity that is not one of these above, and you feel it has a demonstrable safety or health outcome, you are able to apply to the Board of Examiners for this to become an approved activity." (https://www.boepcs.qld.gov.au/knowledgebase/article/KA-01032/en-us#_Toc96515824 )

We recently had one of our users contact us on this matter – they had completed RIIERR503D (Implement emergency preparedness and response systems) and wanted advice as is NOT on the approved list, despite the underground equivalent being already approved RIIERR501E (Implement underground coal mine emergency preparedness and response systems) [5 HOURS).

We reached out to the Board of Examiners for clarification and received the following response “The board is currently reviewing the approach to the CPD system. Depending on the outcome, there may be broader changes to the CPD program. As such, we are not accepting new items for the list until this review is complete.”

Therefore, it looks like for now we will need to wait before attempting any new activities – focus on the existing list for the moment. You’ll find links permanently posted at https://www.boepcs.qld.gov.au/knowledgebase/category/?id=CAT-01000
